Celebrating new and ambitious local art and design, Melbourne Now will cross a range of contemporary disciplines including fashion and jewellery, painting, sculpture, architecture, ceramics, video, performance, printmaking and publishing.
The inaugural 2013 exhibition was an unprecedented survey of some of the most exciting local contemporary practitioners. Ten years on, Melbourne Now 2023 will again highlight the latest art, architecture, design, and cultural practice shaping Melbourne.
A cornerstone of the first Melbourne Now, Community Hall will return as a space to gather, connect and celebrate Melbourne’s diverse and creative communities, as well as popular NGV Kids interactive projects.
Bold in scale, Melbourne Now will be displayed throughout all levels of The Ian Potter Centre: NGV Australia, including permanent collection galleries, showcasing new works and commissions by emerging, mid-career and senior practitioners as well as local collectives.
Babel Bookcase, curated by Brad Haylock, gathers a selection of Melbourne’s best graphic design and communication design of the past decade, from posters, books, typefaces, websites, and apps, to branding, placemaking, and experimental practices.

Civic Architecture will survey five award-winning civic projects by Melbourne architects that have been catalysts for transformation in different neighbourhoods, including in Dandenong, Broadmeadows and Geelong.
Inspired by the rich history of Australian community halls, a longstanding and ubiquitous presence in many metropolitan and regional communities, Melbourne Now’s own Community Hall will bring people together through a daily rotation of both interactive and contemplative moments, from performance, talks and conversations, community events and workshops, to films, demonstrations and opportunities for quiet reflection.
A very popular feature of the inaugural exhibition, the Design Wall will return in 2023. Design Wall will celebrate more than 35 products designed in Melbourne over the past decade, including guitars, ladders, pillows, luggage, motorbikes and more.
Fashion Now will be an immersive display featuring the work of 18 local fashion designers, ranging from couture to streetwear, it investigates the ways fashion is embedded in our city’s identity.
Jewellery Now presents a focused display of 12 artists which enunciates why Melbourne is a global capital for contemporary jewellery.
No House Style assembles a large group furniture designers and residential architects in an installation referencing the domestic interior.
Print Portfolio will comprise 12 new prints commissioned especially for the exhibition. Contributing one print each, established and emerging artists explore a range of techniques reflecting Melbourne’s flourishing print community.
Artist Film Program: co-curated by recess comprises daily screenings within the Community Hall. The program is co-curated with Olivia Koh from recess – a Melbourne-based online platform showcasing contemporary moving-image works.
Photography display, Slippery Images, will challenge the way audiences think about photography through works that quite literally push the boundaries of the medium.
Vessels is a project developed in collaboration with Craft Victoria and will offer a stunning display of large-scale vessels by local artists working across ceramics, glass, textile and wood.
