Discover how to use the NGV’s rich collection of First Nations art and design to enhance the study of texts in the literature classroom. Use artworks to delve into key concepts like connection to Country, the impact of colonisation, and the challenges of reconciliation. Students will analyse and discuss a range of First Nations art to explore diverse perspectives, knowledge and expressions of cultural identity and consider how they may apply to the interpretation of texts.

Students will:

  • Analyse Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander artworks to identify themes of connection to Country, colonisation, and reconciliation.
  • Explore how First Nations art reflects cultural identity, perspectives, and knowledge, and apply this understanding to the interpretation of texts.
  • Critically evaluate the lasting effects of colonisation as depicted in First Nations art, fostering a deeper understanding of its relevance to contemporary Australian society.
